Juan Santamaria International Airport in the Alajuela Province is the closest international airport, which is a mere 25 minutes by car. It is worth noting that if you are driving, you can use the hotel parking lot for free. It is located on Avenue 1 in between Calle 7 and Calle 9. You can also arrange for an airport transfer if you book a room with a hotel associated with the Horseshoe Casino.

To enter the casino you will need to be at least 18 years old. The dress code is very relaxed, as the casino caters to a mix of vacationing tourists and poker players.
Casino at Horseshoe
Horseshoe Casino’s name may sound familiar, as it is the same name as the former Las Vegas establishment, which is now known as Binion’s Gambling Hall. However, this establishment is nowhere near as glamorous as its former U.S. counterpart. That being said, the tables and the casino floor’s décor have been designed to give visitors that true Las Vegas appeal – but of course with its own twist of Costa Rican culture, which adds to the charm.
There are plenty of table games including craps, poker, roulette, and blackjack available. Most noticeably the tables are quite spacious. Nowadays, Las Vegas casinos tend to cram in as many tables as possible to maximize their profits per square foot. The Horseshoe Casino’s Costa Rican, Vegas-style casino has larger tables than others, which adds to its personality and gives it that Las Vegas feel from 10 to 15 years ago.
As the casino is located in a busy area of town, the management has decided to keep the casino open 24/7.
Table Games at Horseshoe Casino
There are 16 tables on and around the casino floor. The poker room has 3 poker tables, which are sectioned off in a separate poker room. On the main casino floor craps and roulette tables can be found along with several blackjack tables.
Poker is particularly popular at this establishment with No Limit Texas Hold’em being the game of choice. Both single and multi-table tournament poker games are regularly held. If there are enough participants, there are usually cash games also being played regularly. Many of the players here are expatriates (mostly from the U.S.), tourists, and sometimes locals will also be at the tables.
There are only Omaha games sometimes, but they will have to be set up by the dealer or pit boss’ choice (if there are enough players that agree to change the style of the game). In all cases, dealers are assigned to each poker table, and the casino takes a rake from each pot played.
Slots and Video Poker at Horseshoe Casino
Horseshoe Casino also prides itself with a small collection of video slots. There are around 50 slot machines in the casino with various themes.
Even though there are only about 50 machines, there is a wide selection of themes to be played, with the most popular slots having more than one machine available. The collection of slots here is large enough to keep you entertained with its still quite diverse range of themes.
Hotel and Accommodations at Horseshoe Casino
The Sportsman Lodge is affiliated with the Horseshoe Casino and it offers guests plenty of amenities, as well as nice rooms. Airport transfers, WiFi, restaurants, nightclubs, safety deposit boxes, dry cleaning and laundry, spas with saunas, massages as well as 24-hour fitness are all available. You may want to consider booking early if you plan to visit during peak season as the hotel only has 30 rooms available.
If you want to see one of the many tourist attraction around Costa Rica, the hotel offers concierge services and there is tourist booking service just outside the hotel.
Restaurants at Horseshoe Casino
At the hotel’s bar and restaurant where you can grab an ice-cold beer as well as order from a select menu that has breakfast, lunch, and dinner options with a full American menu. The bar is well-known for showing live sports with several TV screens grouped together into triangles if three screens, so there is always an angle to watch your favorite sports games. Also, there are plenty of bar girls here, which tends to make this place quite popular for male tourists that like to party.
